Experiences
The trail has a paved surface ideal for bicycling. It traverses through mostly natural areas, so there is ample opportunity to enjoy a brisk pace or go slow and view the wildlife.
- Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water. The only potable water sources are at the Polk City, Green Pond and Mable trailheads.
- Helmets are recommended for all cyclists. Florida law requires helmets for cyclists age 16 and younger.
- Bring sunscreen and bug spray.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- When bicycling on a trail or dirt road shared with hikers or equestrians, be respectful of others. Learn more about our state park rules and trail etiquette.
- Bicycles, including electric bicycles, may be used on trails designated for bicycle use with the park system, consistent with Section 316.20655, Florida Statutes.
- All bicycles should operate in a safe manner.
Whether you are walking, jogging, hiking or running, the 29.2 miles of paved trail are great for these activities. Some sections are quite remote and isolated, so be sure to bring plenty of drinking water.
- We recommend wearing appropriate footwear (closed toed-comfortable walking/running shoes) sunscreen, insect repellent and sun hat.
- Remember to travel only half as far as you plan to walk to allow for the return trip, unless you make plans to have someone pick you up at one of the four trail heads.
The Green Swamp is a great place to view wildlife such as white-tail deer, alligator, raccoon, opossum, snakes and turtles, just to name a few. A variety of birds can be seen such as American bald eagle, osprey and barred owl.
- Please give the animals right of way, and remember that it is unlawful and dangerous to feed any wildlife.
- Taking pictures from a safe distance is always encouraged.
