Sea Turtle Patrol

North Peninsula State Park

Our sea turtle patrol volunteers have had a very busy summer with a record-breaking number of nests this season! The volunteer turtle patrol is made up of a very knowledgeable and compassionate group of people who are dedicated to helping the park monitor our beaches for sea turtles.

Several of the volunteers have been doing turtle patrol for many years and are a great resource when it comes to identifying which species of turtles made the tracks, where the nest is in relation to the tracks and the least disruptive ways to monitor the beach. They are very hard working especially in the hot summer months when the nesting season is at its busiest. Sea turtle patrol comes in at sunrise on weekends and holidays when the park has the least amount of staff on hand.

We are grateful for the dedication of the seven volunteers who assist staff, rain or shine, patrolling the beach every day from May through October.

The purpose of sea turtle patrol is to record data and submit it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the agency responsible for protecting these amazing animals.
