T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Calling Illinois home, Mary and Scott Jewell spend their winters volunteering at Florida State Parks. After the couple retired in 2017, they knew that sitting around wasn’t for them. They’ve been volunteering ever since and say that “getting involved with the state parks and helping wherever we can has been a great fit.”

While Scott and Mary have volunteered at a variety of Florida State Parks, they particularly enjoy their time at T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. They discovered St. Joseph Peninsula back in the early '90s and it became their favorite camping spot. Giving back to their favorite park has been a rewarding experience for the couple. According to Scott and Mary, “You can’t beat giving back to the place you love, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s on the beach!”

Scott and Mary can be found doing many chores around the park, from cleaning facilities to interacting with park guests. Mary says, “We treat the park like our home. If we see something that needs attention, we take care of it.”

Whether they are working alone or alongside park staff, Scott and Mary can be depended upon for any task. Their positive attitude and smiling faces are appreciated by all who know them.

In August 2021 Scott and Mary were recognized for their outstanding contributions as the Park Service District One's Volunteers of the Month.

Thank you, Scott and Mary. We appreciate you!
