Volunteer Spotlight

Bruce Kay

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park

Spending much of his time volunteering in the park, Bruce learned about the four, distinct habitats that occur within John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. Even though he was born and raised in West Palm Beach, he experienced a renewed enthusiasm for knowledge about the area.

Currently as a permitting engineer with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) during the day, he is also certified as a DEP boating, trailering and snorkeling instructor.  Over the years, Bruce has used this knowledge to train and certify several of the park’s rangers.

Bruce has lead kayak tours, reef tours, classes on snorkeling and kayaking, and presentations about the nearshore reefs in Palm Beach County. Bruce has also volunteered during the monthly Moonlight Concerts. During intermission, he sets up a spotting telescope on the estuary’s boardwalk and shares his knowledge about the moon, constellations and various planets.  As an added bonus, Bruce met his wife while volunteering at one of these concerts.

Bruce's passion and enthusiasm for his volunteer work makes visitors feeling inspired after spending time with him.
