Craig Johnson

Park Services Specialist, Craig Johnson

Curry Hammock State Park

Born and raised in rural Maine, Craig Johnson grew up in a large family in surrounded by nature. Craig sought to give others this connection with the outdoors and began his career in Maine’s Fort Knox State Park.  Craig came to Florida to visit his parents, fell in love with the state and decided to plant some roots.

He was initially hired at Long Key State Park in 1982 and eventually assigned to the land that would become Curry Hammock State Park. When Curry Hammock became an official state park, Craig was one of two rangers here on opening day greeting guests.  He is currently the Park Services Specialist, and has been awarded employee of the month for District 5 twice, also winning the coveted Florida Department of Environmental Protection Star Award in 2013.

Craig most enjoys helping others enjoy a connection to the outdoors. He can be found walking the beach twice a day looking through the wrack line for whatever trash or treasure the daily tide has brought in, and always taking a moment to answer questions.

Craig says that the best part of working in the park is encountering all of the different people from all over the world and introducing them to the beautiful Florida Keys through Curry Hammock State Park.
