Park Ranger, Billy Thomas

Nature Coast State Trail

Billy Thomas first made a connection with the outdoors when he was very young, hunting with his dad, caring for livestock and learning about different types of grasses and trees. He has always seen himself as an outdoors type of person.

Billy retired in 2003 after 37 years of public service. About 12 years ago he started looking for a part-time job where he could be outside again. When a volunteer position opened at the Nature Coast State Trail, he submitted his application and has been here ever since, now working as park staff.

Billy’s favorite place to be is out on the trail with the bikers, hikers and horseback riders who use it. Although his work primarily is to make sure signs are in compliance with park and safety regulations, he really enjoys getting to talk to people. He says that what makes the trail special is the people who come to use it. He has met visitors from all over the world and the country. Billy’s motto is “You never know who you are going to run across or where they’re from until you say hello.” We are glad to have his positive attitude and friendly personality here at the Nature Coast State Trail.
