Volunteer Spotlight,  A Year to Volunteer

Volunteers gather around to learn about the next volunteer assignment.

Volunteer Spotlight, A Year to Volunteer

These volunteers are creating a movement to encourage everyone to give one year of their life to volunteering.

A Year to Volunteer is a group of approximately 30 volunteers who travel by RV, performing service projects.

Organizers Phil and Shar Roos created a non-profit in 2022 and started in Florida in 2023 by volunteering at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring. Currently, they are working on projects at Little Manatee River State Park, just south of Tampa.

In exchange for their volunteer services, the park provides dry camping, guidance and the resources to get the job done.

The group is expected to be in the park for two weeks.

Little Manatee River State Park was on the northern edge of impacts from Hurricane Ian. Y2V volunteers will be helping repair and maintain facilities.

Projects will include

  • Repairing fence and cleaning up the trail/firebreak at Kings Point.
  • Repairing pavilion 3, clearing and widening the trail and repairing the bridge on Oxbow Trail.
  • Painting restrooms near playground and all other park buildings.
  • Power washing all park buildings pavilion 2 and fence.

They will also tackle painting and maintaining park buildings, some basic plumbing projects and improvements at the canoe launch area.
