Atlanta Botanical Garden Volunteers
The Department of Conservation and Research at the Atlanta Botanical Garden organized 43 volunteers coming from four different states between January 20 - February 9, 2019 to assess the immediate damage to the endangered Torreya taxifolia population following Hurricane Michael.
Logging a total of 886 volunteer hours they were able to survey 288 Torreya trees across Torreya State Park. Of the 288 trees, 18% were dead or missing with only 35 trees having died as a direct result from Hurricane Michael debris.
Their hard work also helped to save 73 live Torreya tees from hurricane debris with all expected to recover.
