Arthur Carton, Park Services Specialist

John D. MacArthur Beach State Park

Art Carton was born in Whitestone, New York and moved to Hobe Sound, Florida in 1977.  He grew up surfing, snorkeling and fishing with his many brothers and friends.

His career in the Florida Park Service started in 1994 and he has worked at several parks including Rainbow Springs and Silver Springs. Since 2004, he has been one of the two park services specialists at the park. He was drawn to work at the park by his love for the ocean along with the plant and animal life within its boundaries.

Some of his duties at the park include working with school groups, supervising an AmeriCorps team, assisting with the park’s sea turtle program, removing nonnative plants and animals, planning special events and working in the park’s nursery.

There are many jobs that he is passionate about doing at the park, but his main passion is preserving and promoting the use of Florida native plants.  His love of plants is in his blood, starting with his grandfather who loved to visit the Brooklyn botanical garden. He has designed several gardens and even won an award from the Florida Native Plant Society for landscaping done at Silver Springs State Park.

He can’t wait to see what the future holds and can’t think of anyplace else he would rather spend his days.
