Salt flats, or salt pans, are huge and flat areas of land. Salt flats are covered with salt and other minerals and they usually look white because of the salt’s existence. These ranges of land normally form in deserts and other arid places where large bodies of water have dried up over the years and the salt and other natural resources are the remnants. Salt flats can be found around the world.

Since the large presence of salts and other minerals, salt flats are often resources that are mined for their properties. In addition, there are many other human activities and development that have taken place on them because of their very large, flat nature. The salt flats are a great place for various wildlife to take refuge including shore birds and small mammals.
