Seagrapes line the beach.

Andrew Flanner, Park Manager

The arrival of fall marks the end of the sea turtle nesting season at the park. With the help of our volunteers and staff, we made it through another busy year with a total of 2,502 nests throughout our 1.6 miles of beach. As part of a permitted, citizen science program at the park, 78 of the 1,580 loggerhead sea turtle nests were marked and excavated. After excavating a nest, trained citizen scientists recorded data that can be used for research and scientific study. This year’s excavations were very successful with a high rate of hatched eggs for most of the excavated nests.

Although the sea turtles are gone till next season, there is still plenty to do and see at our park. Take a walk along our beach and you will see migrating fish, shorebirds and plenty of shells to collect. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the park’s estuary. Visit our nature center and enjoy the amazing aquariums, interpretive displays, educational movies or do some shopping in the gift shop.

We look forward to sharing our piece of paradise with you!
