Assistant park manager and former Girl Scout, Lynne Flannery, works at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach.

What inspired you to work in the parks and recreation field?

Countless hours spent exploring the woods and lakes and swinging from vines of my childhood neighborhood led me to pursue a degree in science with a passion to conserve. That education combined with my natural curiosity, led me to a career in interpretation, which morphed into a home with the Florida Park Service.

Describe your job in the Florida Park Service. What are the favorite parts of your job?

As the assistant manager at Gamble Rogers, I love having the opportunity to play a significant role on the team that cares for a beautiful slice of coastal Florida. Providing amazing access to these precious natural resources to our visitors is a highlight of my job.

How did your participation in Girl Scouts prepare you for your career?

With about 10 years’ experience in scouting, I was exposed to a wide variety of activities that I may not have otherwise had a chance to experience. I was also surrounded by intelligent girls and women who always provided support, guidance and encouragement to pursue any goals.

What advice would you offer to young women who want to pursue a career in parks and recreation?

This career can take you to amazing places where you can protect treasured natural and cultural resources, while always keeping the curiosity you had as a kid about the outdoors alive. Building solid relationships with other women in my field has helped provide me guidance and strength.
