Birding at Colt Creek State Park

Great blue heron wading in the lake.

Bring your binoculars and your life list! Birding is terrific at Colt Creek State Park.

In 2007, the Lake Region Audubon Society did a yearlong survey identifying 150 species of birds. The following year, the park was designated on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

You will see a variety of species here. Look for swallow-tailed kite, bald eagle, owl, moorhens and woodpeckers. You might also see Eastern bluebird, black-bellied whistling duck, meadow lark, and a variety of other wading birds and warblers.

You never know what you might see at Colt Creek State Park.

Tips for success

  • Learn bird calls! Listen closely to the tunes you may hear in the park. Birds sing specific notes to communicate with each other, and each call is unique.
  • Be sure to bring the correct gear. A pair of boots, binoculars, and a field guide for identifying different bird species will be helpful when navigating trails. Don’t forget outdoor basics like a bottle of water and bug spray.
