Volunteer Spotlight, Richard Buffington

Alafia River State Park

As a youngster, Richard experienced life in many different places because his father was a naval officer and jet pilot who transferred to states including Oregon, California, Texas, Virginia and Georgia. In 2008, Richard decided to leave everything behind to travel full time in an RV with his furry companion, Charlie.

While camping at Hillsborough River State Park, Richard was approached by a park volunteer who offered to show him around. This experience drew his interest in volunteering with state parks. However, it wasn’t until 2010, while he visited Rainbow Springs State Park, that he decided to help by filling in a volunteer spot. In a period of 11 years, Richard has dedicated his time to over 22 parks.

Richard has had the opportunity to assist park staff with many duties including helping district biologists relocate and block off bird nests. What he enjoys the most about his time at Florida State Parks is getting to talking to visitors and getting to know each park and its staff members. Richard is a true asset for Alafia River State Park and all Florida State Parks.
