Doug Pearsall, Park Ranger

San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park

After experiencing a guided hike in Glacier National Park at the age of 10, Doug Pearsall knew that he would one day pursue the privilege of working with nature. His parents were devoted park visitors and so he spent many of his formative years exploring state and national parks.

At 17 he was employed as the caretaker of a 1900s farmhouse, earning $1 per year. Due to the influence of his neighbors, which consisted of naturalists and Amish farmers, he determined his life’s philosophy to be “take care of Mother Earth and she will take care of you.”

Later in life, he pursued a degree in forestry only to realize that his passion prevailed in showcasing Florida’s natural resources. He regards San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park as far more than a workplace; this is his classroom and his sanctuary.

Doug invites you to familiarize yourself with one of the most diverse natural areas in Florida. He remains captivated by this park’s champion trees, abundant wildlife, meandering trails and rich historic past. When you are there, be sure to keep an eye out for Doug. He’s eager to share his insight into the wonders of this magnificent park.
