The mission of the Florida Park Service is: "to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources." What role do you play in our mission?

As a training specialist, I assist state park staff with their training needs. I also assist with the development and implementation of Florida Park Service interpretation and education initiatives and programs for the District 3 state parks.

How does your heritage influence your experience in the outdoors?

As a first-generation Colombian American with indigenous and African roots, my culture connects me to the outdoors through its music, art and cuisine. These parts of my culture all draw inspiration from Colombia's beautiful land and resources which have nurtured my love for nature since I was young. This passion led me to a career in conservation where I am a steward of the land and work to protect Florida's natural and cultural resources.

Any advice for Latinx who are interested in a career in conservation or recreation?

Don't be afraid to explore the environmental and conservation field as a career. If you enjoy nature, exploring the outdoors and educating people about the environment, then a career in conservation could be for you. The outdoors is for everyone, but the environmental field and movement need more representation of Latinx. I have found great pride in being able to represent the Latinx communities in the outdoors and am always excited to share my passion when educating fellow Latinx.
