Gail Overstreet - Jacksonville, Florida - We visit Washington Oaks fairly often and have seen it in every season. We've seen it in the dark, as masses of people come to enjoy the luminaries, the fairyland of white lights, and candles floating in tiny boats on the ponds. I love the huge grass carp, the lightening quick water snakes (not cotton mouths, fear not)and the graceful koi who populate the delightful waterways throughout the gardens. Along with the cultivated gardens, Washington Oaks also has several very good nature trails. But, picnicers, beware of the overly bold squirels who come a-begging in large groups. However, the picnic grounds are lovely and extensive with clean restrooms and soda machines. Washington Oaks beach is also lovely, with gritty sand and pounding surf.
