Manager's Message
If you’ve never explored the Savannas by canoe or kayak, now is the time. Unusual amounts of fall and winter rain have left the marsh brimming with water, and our canoe/kayak team reports many new routes to explore.
If you are a birder, now is a wonderful time to explore the Savannas. The rookery is currently hosting a variety of nesting birds: anhinga, egrets and glossy ibis, to name a few. Many birds are migrating through, and we can expect to see a variety of wading birds in the marsh as the water levels drop. One of our nesting bald eagle pairs has successfully hatched two eggs.
The marsh vistas are breathtaking and easily accessed from the White and Yellow Trails. Try taking a hike along our Yellow Trail to experience the rainbow of wildflowers just coming into bloom.
Be on the lookout for our new electronic newsletter, which should be available by the middle of April on this website. This will be a great source for information on coming events. Also, if you’re interested in outdoor summer camps, call to find out more about our Swamp Stomp program – this program has been a hit for over five years now.
As always, fishing and kayaking are great options. If you're new to the Savannas, be sure to visit our Education Center first to pick up a trail guide and learn more about the park.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
- Dan Griffin, Park Manager
Welcome to Savannas Preserve State Park
Freshwater marshes or "savannas" once extended all along Florida's southeast coast. Stretching more than 10 miles from Ft. Pierce to Jensen Beach, this preserve is the largest and most intact remnant of Florida's east coast savannas. A good place for visitors to start is the Environmental Education Center where they can learn about the importance of this unique and endangered natural system. Picnic tables are available near the center. Canoeing, kayaking, and fishing in the wetlands are popular activities. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers can enjoy the diversity of habitats this undisturbed area offers. Over eight miles of multi-use trails provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Guided walks and canoe trips are available by reservation. The Education Center is located in Port St. Lucie, two miles east of U.S. 1 on Walton Road.
