Manager's Message

NOTICE 06/08/09: North Peninsula State Park is scheduled to install fencing around the front portion of Smith Creek Landing. The park will now be available to visitors beginning at 8:00 a.m. and will close at sunset.

North Peninsula State Park is currently in the first phase of a twenty-three acre saltmarsh restoration project. The restoration site takes place in a spoil area occurring along the Intracoastal Waterway north of Highbridge Road. This spoil area was built up on historical saltmarsh as a result of dredge activities in the Intracoastal Waterway which are believed to have occurred circa 1940. The goal of this restoration project is to create a healthy, productive saltmarsh habitat which will be connected to open water, benefiting an extremely wide range of plants and animals.

During the project, heavy equipment will be brought in to clear existing vegetation and assist in the removal of spoil material. However, the effect on visitors should be minimal, as this project will not restrict access to the recreational portions of the park. Visitors may experience increased vehicle activity along state road A1A, just south of the Flagler/Volusia County line at various times throughout the project and are advised to watch for heavy equipment utilizing the power line road that intersects the trail.

We greatly appreciate your patience while this project is being completed. We hope that you will share in our excitement as we continue to restore the natural communities of North Peninsula State Park.

- Barbara Roberts, Park Manager
