Testimonials for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park
- A most enjoyable and informative tour. My daughter and I learned a lot about both the author and Cracker Florida of the 1930s-1940s. At the end of the tour, all of the kids present were given a paperback copy of "The Yearling," which I thought was a wonderful gesture.
Sheila Scarborough - Gainesville, FL - I lived two yrs of my childhood in Cross Creek and its one of my happiest memories! I had recently went to Cross Creek the weekend of feb 24th! Memories just flooded my mind when I reconnected to this beautiful area. Even remembered swings in the park. Especially riding a boat on orange lake. Thank you so much for making my vacation so wonderful! Its like time stood still and we still have peaceful places to go too on this earth. Marjorie was a very blessed woman to have such a peaceful and wonderful home.. Thanks again !
Deborah Hayden - Cleveland , Ga - With elegance and sensitivity Marjorie Rawlings captures the magic, the mystery and yes, the enduring enchantment of Florida to which so many of us have made our own 'pilgrimages' for myriad
purposes. Thank you for preserving this particular beloved place of Mrs. Rawlings whose writings can inspire us to not only find our own special places but which also challenge us to honor the special places of others and nature in general. She had both the practical approach to nature of a farmer and the spiritual approach of a mystic, her balance of which is a lesson for us all and especially for the children. Please keep up the excellent work at this site.
Charles Brown - Apalachicola, Florida - I visited the park with my husband and 20 month old son. He had a wonderful time seeing the ducks, collecting oranges from the trees and running around the yard. It really is a magical place, so simple and low key. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like when Marjorie first arrived there. It is a lovely setting and worth the drive. The caretakers are very friendly and obviously happy to be there, as well.
Amanda K - Gainesville, FL - As an almost-second-generation Floridian (my grandparents moved here from Savannah when my mother was a toddler in the 20s)I have always been enchanted with stories of old Florida. So different from my Florida of theme parks and beach condos. My 10-year-old daughter and I were reading "The Yearling", so we paid a visit to Cross Creek and MKR's home. It really brought the story, and her own heritage, to life for her. Thank you!
