Manager's Message
What better way to enjoy the Florida Keys than camping by the shore. As our busy winter season turns toward summer, we continue our guided nature walks on Wednesdays and Ranger’s Choice interpretive programs on Thursdays. Calm waters surrounding Long Key provide a great place to explore the mangroves by kayak, or discover a variety of water birds while paddling a canoe around the lagoon.
Take a stroll along the shoreline and look for sea-beans that have washed ashore. These seeds fall from trees growing in distant tropical rainforests, then drift in water currents for thousands of miles until they eventually reach us. Some of the more common ones found are the Hamburger Bean from West Africa, which looks like a tiny hamburger and the Sea Heart, which is shaped like a large, flat, dark-red heart.
Whether you are camping with us, or just spending the day, there are plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer at Long Key State Park.
- Catherine Close, Park Manager
Welcome to Long Key State Park
The Spanish named this island "Cayo Vivora" or Rattlesnake Key because its shape resembles a snake with its jaws open. In the early 20th century, Long Key was the site of a luxurious fishing resort that was destroyed during the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. Today, visitors can explore this island by canoeing through a chain of lagoons or hiking two land-based trails. The Golden Orb Trail leads visitors through five natural communities to an observation tower that provides a panoramic view of the island and its profusion of plant and animal life. Some of the best bonefishing in the Keys is found here. Full-facility campsites overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Located at Mile Marker 67.5, 67400 Overseas Highway.
