A NOTE FROM THE MANAGER

Christy Burch

As the much anticipated cooler weather arrives, our campground is bustling with both Florida natives and seasonal visitors escaping the cold.  If you plan to come camping, be sure to make your reservations early.  Campsites will be in high demand for the rest of the winter season.  If you plan to make a day trip to the park, you can see the park by foot, canoe, or horse.  Our 6 ½ mile hiking trail will lead you through several unique and rare natural communities found here, including Florida scrub, hydric hammock, and scrubby pine flatwoods.  If you’re especially lucky you might spot one of our resident scrub jays.  If the river is more your style, you can rent canoes or kayaks at the park or bring your own.  The river is scenic, but water levels are very low this time of year, so part of the adventure will be avoiding the sandbars and trying not to get stuck in the shallow spots.  Manatees are not frequently sited in the river; you’re more likely to see an alligator swimming by or turtles basking on a log.  If you’re looking for a place to ride your horse, we have a maze of equestrian trails within the park, or you can camp overnight in one of our 4 equestrian sites.
