Volunteer Spotlight, Steve and Laura Turner

Steve and Laura Turner are the recipients of the 2022 Special Event of the Year for Resource-Based Recreation.

Steve and Laura Turner are resident volunteers who have worked as a team at Oscar Scherer State Park since April 2019. Laura has contributed over 2,200 volunteer hours and Steve has contributed over 670 hours. They volunteer at several state parks.

For the past three winter seasons, Steve and Laura have led the monthly Guided Night Paddle along South Creek. This fun, informative paddle is scheduled around the full moon. Steve and Laura welcome the registered paddlers just before sunset and provide tips on what to expect and ensure they have the appropriate water safety gear for the evening. The registration fees for the guided tour support the Friends of Oscar Scherer Park Inc.

Steve and Lana Turner prepare for a paddle event at Oscar Scherer State Park.

For their resident volunteer duties, they enjoy campground hosting, maintenance work and repairs, and working in the ranger station. Steve and Laura both provide excellent customer service and are a great asset to resource-based recreation at Oscar Scherer.

Congratulations, Steve and Lana. Your dedication is appreciated.
