VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT, Holly Grace Thompson

The new bike rack at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

Volunteer Spotlight, Holly Grace Thompson

Holly Grace Thompson is the recipient of the 2022 Youth Volunteer of the Year Award for Greener Initiative.

An Eagle Scout from Troop 1157 in Niceville, Florida, Holly Grace Thompson led efforts to build 24 new bicycle racks near the beach access for the park. Overall, the Scouts contributed more 200 volunteer hours to the project.

Holly demonstrated leadership skills from start to finish. She began by meeting with the maintenance supervisor at the park to learn about the parameters of the project. From there, she created a proposal, planned the project, raised the funds, and worked with area lumber yards to purchase the lumber.

She recruited other Scouts to help her design the bike racks, cut the lumber, build the racks and install them at the beach access.

The new bike racks increased the number of designated spaces by 60%. The park now has more than 300 spaces for bicycles!

Congratulations to Holly Grace. Her project has made a positive impact on the environment by encouraging bicycling as an alternative mode of transport and reducing the demand for motor vehicle parking.

We currently have over 300 spaces for bikes due to Holly’s mission to create a cleaner, healthier environment.
