Park ranger and former Girl Scout, Thea Knott, works at Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon, Florida
What inspired you to work in the parks and recreation field?
My years in the Girl Scouts taught a deep appreciation for enjoying time spent with Mother Nature.
Describe your job in the Florida Park Service. What are the favorite parts of your job?
I'm a Volunteer Coordinator and Interpretive Chairperson. I love interacting with others, caring for my park and teaching others to appreciate nature. I love my park uniform. I feel like I'm still in my Girl Scout uniform every day!
How did your participation in Girl Scouts prepare you for your career?
Girl Scouts taught me to enjoy camping, hiking, campfire skills, arts and crafts, and learning how to plan outdoor adventures.
What advice would you offer to young women who want to pursue a career in parks and recreation?
To pursue a career in parks and recreation, give your local park a call and set up a telephone interview to speak with your local Interpretive Chairman. A college degree in a related field will be a big help in getting your first job.
