Allison Callis served one term as a Project A.N.T member in the Florida Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Program in 2020. She served 1,700 hours at Myakka River State Park.
During that time, she treated non-native plant species, participated in prescribed fires, did wildlife monitoring for frog species and American bald eagles, and performed vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Currently, Allison is the Biological Scientist II at Myakka River State Park located just east of Sarasota, Florida. There she runs the non-native plant treatment program by creating treatment goals and maps of treatment areas, and she supervises AmeriCorps members and other park staff and contractors.
Allison collaborates with park staff and other agencies, like the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Sarasota County, regarding non-native plant treatment goals, wildlife monitoring objectives and research permits.
In addition, Allison runs the wildlife monitoring programs and cultural site monitoring programs of the park.
When Allison served as an AmeriCorps member with the FLCC Program, she enjoyed when Terra Ceia Preserve State Park had workdays and invited AmeriCorps members to assist in the planting of pine trees within the park.
“It was nice to see that we could also plant natives as part of our working goals in the A.N.T. program.”
