Alafia River State Park is an unexpected wild ride through the “Real Florida” even for those like me who have lived their whole life in Florida. When you think of Florida most people think flat, and we are anything but flat! Due to previous land uses we have some of the most drastic elevation changes in the state.

At this park, we provide dynamic public outdoor recreational opportunities within a unique landscape while facilitating the restoration and protection of the natural resources. I have served many years in the parks service, through several different parks, and even I have found myself discovering “new” aspects of Florida throughout this park. One of my favorite trails, out of our over 20 miles worth of hiking/equestrian trails, has been the Old Agrico Trail. It is a prime example of unique landscape due to the different types of topography, ecosystems, wildlife, and even gives you a glimpse into the dynamic system of mountain bike trails of which we have close to 20 miles of. The park is over 7,700 acres comprised of around 20 different natural communities. Due to this, there are many different views you can see all in one place. I have become quite fond of the sunrises and sunsets over these views, not only due to the sky show but the animal parade that tends to happen at these times as well. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing herds of deer, flocks of quail, of course the iconic Florida residents: alligators, and have even been witness to a mother bobcat showing her baby around the park. Our team of park protectors have dubbed the bobcat duo “Freya” and “Small Fry”.

I personally invite you out to discover all that this “Adventure Park” has to offer. Whether you are into hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, wildlife viewing, or just looking to get outside, this park has something for you. We are also always open for volunteers, because when it comes to preservation and restoration it is a group effort, especially when the playground is this big. So come by and talk with one of our helpful Rangers and discover the “Head Waters of the Alafia River and heart of Adventure” that is Alafia River State Park.
