Manager's Message

Special Notice: The Backcountry of the Port Bougainville area of Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is temporarily closed for habitat restoration. Backcountry permits for this area will not be issued until further notice, while restoration is being conducted.

Welcome to Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park. Take a stroll through a tropical forest and find the quiet that being in nature brings. Many visitors to Key Largo enjoy discovering the coral reefs, but often miss this gem. During the fall, a visitor might still need insect repellent and long sleeves and pants (to ward off the mosquitoes) while exploring this tropical hardwood hammock. As temperatures begin to cool (it’s relative!), mosquitoes will no longer be a challenge to enjoying the park. There is a self-guided nature walk, which includes a native plant butterfly garden and a picnic table for your enjoyment (please pack out your trash). Additional backcountry trails (except the Port Bougainville area) are yours to explore simply by completing a backcountry permit at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Ranger Station.

Especially in today’s economy, visiting a state park is an affordable way to entertain the whole family. Make your plans to visit soon!

- Pat Wells, Park Manager
