Manager's Message
Due to damage caused by past storms, the dock at Indian Key has sustained considerable structural damage. Currently, public access to the island is available only by canoe or kayak.
Great news! We are in the final stages of restoring the island dock which is scheduled for the ‘official’ reopening on October 4th, 2008. Currently, we are installing ladders to improve access for boaters. As soon as the ladders have been installed, we will let everyone know.
The island is still open and accessible by smaller boats. Visitors can anchor offshore and wade in, or pull smaller kayaks and canoes into shallow areas around the island.
We encourage you to walk along the improved trail system and view the island’s foundation ruins.
Because Indian Key is so dry, even in the rainy summer season, there aren’t many mosquitoes. However, there is also very little shade on the island, so please bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
- Melba Nezbed, Park Manager
Welcome to Indian Key Historic State Park
In 1836, Indian Key became the first county seat for Dade County. At that time, this tiny island was the site of a lucrative business-salvaging cargo from shipwrecks in the Florida Keys. Accessible only by canoe or kayak, visitors come here to swim, sunbathe, and hike. Fishing is also a popular activity. Boat and kayak rentals are available from Robbie's Marina at (305) 664-9814. Located on the oceanside of U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 78.5.
