Grab Your Bike and Ride!
Cycling is very popular at the General James A. Van Fleet State Trail where visitors ride to forget their worries and escape into nature. This destination is ideal for single riders or a family bike ride!
The former railroad extends 29.2 miles from Polk City to Mabel and traverses three counties: Polk, Lake and Sumter.
With little incline, one slight curve and only three crossroads, this trail is enjoyed by beginner and experienced cyclists alike.
General James A. Van Fleet State Trail is noted for being one of Florida’s most rural trails. Along this state trail are many beautiful vistas including open cattle land, protected forests and wetlands.
There are four trail heads throughout the 29.2-mile trail:
- Polk City Station: Parking lot with picnic pavilion and barbecue grill. A convenience store and restaurants are nearby.
- Green Pond: Parking lot with picnic pavilion and barbecue grill. Restroom facilities north of this trailhead.
- Bay Lake: Parking lot with picnic pavilion and restroom facilities.
- Mabel: Parking lot with picnic pavilion, barbecue grill and restroom facilities.
We recommend you bring:
- Plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent and snacks.
- Map, compass and cellphone.
Many cyclists enjoy visiting the trail to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and venture into Florida’s natural areas to experience …the Real Florida!
