2020 Award for Excellence in Maintenance

Assistant Park Manager Joseph "Joe Berger"

Henry Gonzalez

Award for Excellence in Maintenance

Henry started his career with the Florida Park as a park ranger in 2003. In 2017, he was promoted to his current position of park services specialist (maintenance mechanic) at Collier-Seminole State Park.

Henry has a high level of skill in the field of mechanics and carpentry, and he is often called upon by other parks to assist with their maintenance needs. He serves as a mentor to new employees and sets an example for others to follow. Henry has directed large-scale park projects such as wheelchair ramps, boardwalks and observation platforms that have increased visitor access to more recreational opportunities.

Henry has implemented a cyclical maintenance program that displays strong attention to detail regarding equipment and infrastructure. His maintenance program has proven to be one of the best in the park service, continually updating and evolving with staff and equipment transitions.

Recently, Henry played a huge role in reopening a 6-mile trail that had been closed for several years. Henry planned and led numerous trail workdays involving staff and volunteers repairing boardwalks, trimming vegetation through extremely challenging environments and rough terrain. Although the project faced many challenges and setbacks, Henry continued to press forward and complete the task.

Henry's maintenance strategy has always revolved around visitor needs, which provides them with a safe, clean and well-maintained area to enjoy.

The Award for Excellence in Maintenance is awarded to an employee or volunteer who in their everyday job performance has made significant maintenance contributions that relate to the success over and above division standards and goals during the previous year.
