Fort Clinch State Park Photos

The shallow water at the edge of willow pond is tea colored from the tannin of decaying leaves. Just beneath the surface a small alligator lounges with eyes and nostrils raised to the top. The texture of his skin and back camoflage him in the shadows from the trees above. Looking across the salt marsh, the black and white lighthouse stands high above the tree tops. Shady campsites under the oak trees with rustic wooden rails to define their boundaries.

The shoreline where the Atlantic ocean meets the golden sands of Amelia Island stretches out into the distance. Clear blue sky over the Atlantic Beach Campground. Motorhomes and camping trailers are slipped in between the tall palm trees. A rectangular brown sign for the Fort Clinch Bicycle Trail stands at the entrance to a beautifully wooded path through the maritime hammock. Sweet bay and live oak trees form a canopy over your head as saw palmetto and yaupon holly line the sides of this portal into the woods.

Low brick walls and a large, black cannon adorn the entrance to Fort Clinch State Park. Whitewashed brick walls brighten the magazine containing cannonballs for the many guns in the fort. A sepia toned photograph depicts civil war soldiers marching and doing drills in front of the guard room and sallyport.

Various playground equipment such as slides, swings, and climbing bars sit nestled under the tall oak trees. The browns and greens of the plastic and metal blend into the wooded background as if they sprouted up where they stand. A flock of royal terns gather on the beach under overcast skies. Their gray wings, white breast and black crested heads look like sprinkles of salt and pepper on the shorline. The winding road leading to historic Fort Clinch is canopied by giant live oak trees that drip with gray spanish moss. The sun filtering through their branches casts speckled shadows on the s-shaped curves of the pavement.
Picnic Area and Playground Shorebirds Park Drive
A serene walking trail, soft with fallen leaves from the trees, lays itself out before you. The trees and shrubs create a tunnel into the woods as they rise up and over your head. Park staff and volunteers excavate a sea turtle nest that has already hatched to evaluate its productivity. After reaching elbow deep into the nest cavity in the sand, they pile the leathery egg shell fragments to the side to be counted. Looking down on the parade ground of historic Fort Clinch. Tent flies and trucks in the grassy parade ground depict one of the time periods during which the fort was in use. The two story, brick storehouse building stands strong against the blue sky and the American flag waves in the wind.   A brown and yellow moth with its suede textured wings lights on delicate rosemary branches. Small drops of dew glisten on the tips of the rosemary.

Dozens of civil war era surgical tools are laid out on a rough, wooden table covered in canvas in the Fort Clinch Hospital. They are all different shapes and sizes, each having a specific purpose. Paper bags of candy, jars with gumballs, pickles, licorice and pretzels line the rough wooden shelves and countertops of the Fort Clinch sutlery. There are also canvas sacks of coffee and flour. Iron chandeliers that hold oil lamps hang from the ceiling to light the whitewashed room. A civil war soldier in blue wool pants and homespun shirt bends over the fire to stir the evening meal that is bubbling away in a large, black cast iron kettle.
