Curry Hammock State Park Volunteer Information
We welcomed over 18 million visitors to the 158 Florida State Parks last year. There is no way we could run our parks effectively without the 6,000 volunteers who provided over 1,000,000 hours of service to our visitors, the equivalent of 505 full-time positions. We welcome assistance from our neighbors and visitors in participating in any of our scheduled nature programs, or in helping us improve the physical conditions of the park.
During camping season, we have two host couples who provide assistance to campers and perform cleaning and light maintenance. During peak season, from December through March, we have more applicants than we can accommodate, and positions generally go to people who have host experience within the Florida State Park System. Shoulder seasons, November, April, and May, are the times to obtain that experience.
Local volunteers are needed to assist with guided kayak tours given weekly, and to help keep the shoreline and nature trail free of debris.
If you think you would like to volunteer with us, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Craig Johnson by e-mail at: craig.johnson@dep.state.fl.us or by phone at (305) 289-2690.
The Florida Park Service recognizes the tremendous accomplishments of our volunteers. We are happy to provide orientation, training, and volunteer uniforms (where appropriate). Volunteers are covered by workmans compensation for any work-sustained injuries. After 500 hours of service, volunteers receive a pass good for free admission to any Florida State Park for one year. There is also a statewide annual Volunteer Appreciation Weekend that you are invited to attend. At that gathering, the "Friends of Florida State Parks," a statewide Citizens Support Organization, present annual volunteer recognition awards.
