A NOTE FROM THE MANAGER

Sally Lieb

What a day for a walk in the woods!  The cooler fall weather has the wildlife stirring and breezes stir the wild grasses.  The salt bushes are blooming and the wispy white flower petals being blown around look like snow .  Florida's fall colors may not reflect the stunning tree changes that the north enjoys, but the sandhills are alive with a rainbow of wildflowers, and later in the fall the grapevines give us some bright yellows along with the hickory trees.  Make it educational and pick up some reasonably priced  identification cards from the Ranger Station if you want to learn a little more about our flora and fauna.  It's time to get outside!

The canoes are becoming more and more popular and are frequently all rented early. There is nothing that compares with getting out on this pristine river!  If you have your own vessel it is still about a half mile walk to carry your kayak/canoe down to the boat launch.  Shuttle service is not available.  Swimming is not permitted in the Silver River, but there are many places we can send you for a day trip from the park if you are camping with us.

If campfires are an important part of your camping experience, please call the park for an update on possible burn bans.  That decision is made on a daily basis.

Check special events listing for details on upcoming events.

The Silver River Museum and Environmental Center is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is a $2.00 charge per person; children under six are free. It's a fascinating display of cultural and natural history in Central Florida. Call the museum at 352-236-5401 for further information.
