Longleaf Pine Restoration

Restoring the Uplands

Longleaf pine and wiregrass restoration Torreya State Park
Description

Since 2005, Torreya State Park has conducted large acreage restoration in our upland areas. Working alongside The Nature Conservancy, land that was acquired from logging companies have been transformed from thick sand pine plantations back into native wiregrass and longleaf pine stands. This restoration work is one of the largest in the country, with over 2,500 acres restored back to its natural state.

Around 350 acres are restored yearly, receiving wiregrass seed that is collected onsite and then hand planted with Longleaf Pine plugs. This ecosystem supports many keystone species such as the gopher tortoise, indigo snake and Bachman's sparrow. Work will continue yearly until the remaining 2,400 acres are restored.
