James Permane

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park

James Permane began reading about the Civil War at a very young age, finding he was drawn to learn as much as he could about our nation’s greatest conflict. Through his research, he discovered Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park and the Olustee Battle Reenactment. James has been an active volunteer at Olustee Battlefield since 1985. He travels throughout the United States participating in reenactments, researching the Civil War and even appearing in movies. James reads soldiers' diaries, letters, battle plans and other source materials to make sure his portrayal of a Civil War soldier is accurate, including his role as the Union Commander at the Olustee Battle Reenactment.

James is quick to respond when a park visitor asks for assistance with research. Recently, a first-time visitor discovered that his great-grandfather had fought in the Battle of Olustee. When contacted, James was able to provide information including unit awards his grandfather and great-uncle had received. James is a board member of the Olustee Battlefield CSO, and he's a museum and reenactment committee member. He was recently recognized as the statewide recipient of the Historical Special Event Award.

James’ knowledge of the park and his jovial attitude make him a pleasure for everyone to work with. If you would like to meet James, look for him atop his horse at the Reenactment of the Battle of Olustee, boldly leading the charge.
